Industrialist and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie was known for both accumulating great wealth and giving it away. He moved along with his family from his native Scotland to America in 1848, when he was only 12. During the depression of the 1870s, Carnegie concentrated all of his resources into the manufacturing of steel. By hiring the best people in plant management and keeping up with the latest technology, he dominated the American steel industry, and had done much to make it first in the world. When he retired and sold his company, he found himself one of the world's richest men. Using that money, he paid for thousands of library buildings, set up trusts and endowments, built Carnegie Hall in New York and much more. Eighty-three year old Andrew Carnegie died in 1919. hide information
