While still a teenager, Adolph Simon Ochs worked in a print shop. At age 20 he borrowed $250 and bought a partial interest in the Chattanooga Times. Ochs turned that newspaper into one of the strongest in its region. When he was only 38, he went to New York in 1896 and gained control of the ailing New York Times. He promised that the New York times would, "give the news impartially, without fear or favor." Long after Ochs's death in 1935, the Times continues to be ranked as one of the worlds truly great newspapers. hide information
