Kennedy said, "First, I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth." One million people watched from the ground surrounding Cape Kennedy in Florida on that day, July 16, 1969 as the Saturn V rocket and its Apollo XI crew blasted into space. A half billion more people watched the launch of television. At 10:56 p.m. on July 20th, Neil Armstrong spoke these now-famous words as he stepped onto the surface of the moon, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." hide information
