Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus joined local whites in resisting integration by calling the Arkansas National Guard to block the nine black students from entering Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. President Dwight Eisenhower sent federal troops to protect the students. Eight of the nine black students successfully completed the school year demonstrating that they could and would overcome enormous obstacles to claim their right to an equal education. It was a big step towards integration and an important one, even though it caused nine brave teenagers tremendous difficulty at the time. hide information
